How It Works

1

Initial Consultation

The teenager is seen with and without a parent to allow open discussion. A comprehensive health and psychosocial assessment is conducted.

2

Physical & Mental Health Check

Growth, puberty, nutrition, and physical health are assessed. Validated screening tools are used for mental health and substance use.

3

Health Education & Guidance

The teenager receives age-appropriate education on relevant topics. Concerns are addressed and coping strategies are discussed.

4

Follow-Up & Support

A follow-up plan is agreed upon. Referrals to psychologists, dietitians, or other specialists are made if needed. The teenager is encouraged to take an active role in their health.

Common Questions About Adolescent Health

Yes. Part of the adolescent consultation typically takes place with the parent present and part with the teenager alone. This allows the teenager to discuss sensitive topics confidentially. With the teenager's consent, relevant information is shared with parents to ensure collaborative care.
We provide care for patients up to 18 years of age. We recommend beginning the transition to an adult GP at around 16–18, and Dr Nel can facilitate a smooth handover, ensuring continuity of care.
Yes. While some mood variability is normal during adolescence, persistent mood changes, withdrawal, irritability, or behavioural shifts may indicate an underlying mental health concern. An assessment can help distinguish normal adolescent development from conditions requiring intervention.
Yes. The HPV vaccine is recommended for boys and girls from age 9. It is most effective when given before exposure to the virus. We offer the HPV vaccine as part of our adolescent health and vaccination services.
