Common Questions About Travel Medicine

We recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks before your departure date. Some vaccines require multiple doses over several weeks, and it takes time for immunity to develop after vaccination.
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into many African and South American countries, and may be required if you are travelling from a yellow fever-endemic area. Dr Nel will advise based on your specific itinerary and issue the certificate if needed.
The choice depends on your destination, length of stay, medical history, and potential side effects. Common options include atovaquone-proguanil (Malanil), doxycycline, and mefloquine. Your GP will recommend the most suitable option for you.
Malaria is a risk in parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and northern KwaZulu-Natal, particularly during the rainy season (September to May). Your GP will advise whether prophylaxis is necessary based on your specific destination and travel dates.
